|Reverend Coby Shorter, III
Coby Shorter, III is the Pastor of the Rosewood Avenue Baptist Church, Austin, Texas. A native of Eagle Lake, Texas, Pastor Shorter was nurtured in the home of his parents, the Reverend and Mrs. Coby (Claudine B.) Shorter, Jr. While growing up, he was an active member of the Providence Baptist Church of Eagle Lake where his father still serves as pastor.
In addition to his involvement in various ministries of the Providence Church, Pastor Shorter was also a member of the music staff serving as both church organist and later a director of the church’s music ministry. His musical skills also allowed him to serve the Pleasant Grove and Saint Matthew Baptist Churches, College Station, Texas, and the Saint John College Height Baptist Church, Austin, Texas.
Immediately following his graduation from Rice High School in 1984, Pastor Shorter was elected State President of the Texas Association of the Future Farmers of America. The following year he was selected National Secretary of the Future Farmers of America. While this is a national agricultural youth organization of nearly a half million members, to date only two African Americans have ever served as state president and only four African Americans have been selected as national officers. Both duties required Pastor Shorter to travel nationally and internationally representing the FFA.
Upon returning to Texas, Pastor Shorter completed his undergraduate studies in 1989 earning a Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University (magna cum laude graduate). His theological training has included Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Austin, Texas and Liberty University Seminary, Lynchburg, Virginia.
In addition to his deep commitment to the church, Pastor Shorter has held several positions in both the private and public sector including employment with, American Cyanamid, Crop Chemical Protection Division, Indianapolis, Indiana and Kalamazoo, Michigan; the United States Senate office of Phil Gramm, Dallas and Houston; the Texas Department of Agriculture, Austin; and the Office of the Governor. Since being in the Governor’s office, he has served as Policy Director for Agriculture and Conservation and is the current Deputy Director for Governmental Appointments.
Pastor Shorter and his wife, Patricia, are the proud parents of one son, Coby, IV
